Madame Merle’s House of Fortune

Curated by Alexis Macnab

Madame Merle's House of Fortune popped-up for a one-night-only audience interactive performance happening. Part of Macnab’s ongoing exploration of Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady, the event delved into one character’s psyche and her intoxicating hold on the novel’s protagonist. Tarot cards, self-portraits, a wishing-tree, video-installation, and life drawing filled a space fronted by a paper-dollhouse exhibit featuring some of Madame Merle's pearls of wisdom. Exploring fate, destiny, identity, chicanery, snake oil, and small miracles, the evening offered revelations to a steady stream of adventure-seekers. Presented at Automata in Los Angeles, August, 2013.
